Rippowam PTO Announcements

Rippowam Newsletter Week of March 7, 2016

March PTO Meeting

Our next general PTO meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 9th at 7 pm in the Rippowam auditorium . The presentation “Good Kids, Bad Choices: Drugs and the Adolescent” is a collaborative effort between Liberation Programs Inc, Communities 4 Action, The Stamford Police Department, and the Rippowam PTO. The focus of the evening will be a candid presentation by the Stamford Police Department. They will be discussing the types of drugs available to the kids in our community. This will be followed by a discussion about why kids use drugs, and strategies for parents. There will be written material available, and is open to parents of all Stamford schools. It is an adult event, so parents are encouraged to
come on their own if possible.

6th Graders learn about Shakespeare
Friday, March 18.  Performance of  Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare.

Shakesperience is a professional theater company located in Connecticut that reaches a Northeast audience of adults and students with their outdoor, in school, and residency performances.  As in the past, they will be coming to Rippowam to present this year’s play,  Julius Caesar, for the sixth grade.  Julius Caesar deals with topical issues of loyalty, good governance, and ambition.

The company will perform an hour and fifteen minute version that includes the most significant story elements of the play while still employing iambic pentameter and blank verse language.   Students will have a mini-unit in which they will read an abridged version of the play and study character, plot, and theme.  The yearly Shakespeare performance has been a highlight for students as they do not normally get a chance to read, understand and then see a performance of this great master’s work.
